Best Baby Gates That Work!: Top 7 Reviews

(Last Updated On: August 12, 2019)

I remember some years ago, visiting a friends’ place for dinner. They live in this amazing house and their kid was around 2 at the time, so it seemed like everything was surrounded with gates! At that moment I couldn’t really understand, I knew it was completely necessary, but I also felt sorry for that beautiful house. Now, I completely understand them, I’d put gates everywhere just to keep my child safe.

Types To Choose From

There are basically two types: (1) Hardware-Mounted, and (2) Pressure-Mounted ones.

Hardware-Mounted

This is the most secure one of the two types, even though it all depends on whether you instal it properly. They’re usually made of wood, enamel-coated steel, or aluminum tubing. In order to mount it, you do it by screwing brackets into a door frame, or framing behind the walls. Some of the hardware-mounted ones can be removed from the mounting hardware when you’ll need to open a passageway. And no worries, there are easy ways to fill those holes once you’re done using it. These are your option for closing the top end of stairs.

Pressure-Mounted

Unlike the hardware-mounted ones, the pressure-mounted type works this way that it’s held in an opening by pressure against the door frame or walls. This means that there will be no need to drill holes in order to mount it. There are different mechanisms they use to lock the door into position, for instance some of them have two sliding panels that adjust in order to make it fit the opening. These are usually made of wood with enamel-coated steel or aluminium tubing, but also can be plastic, wire, nylon mesh, or plastic-coated wire. The pressure-mounted ones are most suitable for places where you don’t think there is any way your kid might fall, so between rooms, or at the bottom end of stairs.

Choosing Your Baby Gate

I’m sure you only want the safest options for your child. You wouldn’t even be reading this post if you didn’t! So for guaranteed safety, I advise you to consider a few things before buying one. And here are just the main points that you should think of when choosing a proper one for your bub:

  • The type you pick depends on the place you’d like to mount it in. Not all doors are fit for any place equally, some of them are great for stair ends, and some for doorways. Simple-swing ones are great for bottom and top end of stairs, as well as doorways, but do know that the pressure-mounted ones require walls on each side to support the pressure. Also, be careful, one with a bottom rail is a tripping hazard when installed at the bottom end of stairs.
  • Buy only good quality ones. Your little one will give all his effort to pull it and move it, so only get really sturdy ones. You’d be surprised on how much time and energy kids can put into finding a way (even biting it sometimes!) to open one.
  • The locking mechanism should be one that only grown-ups can figure out. Should go without saying, but believe me, some locking mechanisms are so simple that even kids can unlock them.
  • Choose one that you can open with one hand, you don’t want to put yourself into situations where you’d need to put down things in order to open the door, just think of cases when you’re carrying something in your hand – your bub, laundry basket, groceries, etc.
  • If your doorway is really wide, don’t forget to be extra careful when buying gates. In some cases you might have to buy an extra extension, so keep this in mind and look for really big  onesor ones you can get an extension with.

Conclusion

Remember, it’s your child’s safety we’re talking about. Getting a baby gate is not a place you’d like to save some money and buy something cheap. Instead, I’d advice you to go on high quality baby gates that fit your home properly.
