How do Baby Monitors for Twins Work?

You might not know much about baby monitors, but you should know that they usually have 2 parts. A baby video monitor set comes with a transmitter and a receiver. You place the transmitter which is the camera in your twins’ room. You keep the receiver unit (it comes with an LCD screen usually) in your room so you can monitor your twins.

The 2 parts of the monitor set use airwaves on a fixed frequency to transmit signals between each other. It is what kind of signals they are that decide if it’s digital or analog.

What do Analog and Digital Mean?

Analog, a decades-old technology, transmits a continuous audio or video signal through a series of pulses that are broken up, transmitted, and then put back together on the receiving end.

Digital is a newer type of signal transmission. It encrypts the audio or video signal, scrambling it into a series of codes that are then transmitted. When the scrambled code travels the radio frequency and reaches its receiver, it is unscrambled.

What are the Pros and Cons of Each?

Each type of monitor has its own advantages and disadvantages. Where you live plays a part in which type of monitor would be best for you.

Security and Signal Interception

The security and safety of your family is likely at the top of your list. No wireless monitors are 100% secure. But if you have neighbors nearby, a monitor that uses an analog signal will get more signal interference and interceptions from other neighbors who have similar baby monitors.

If you have nearby neighbors, a digital monitor would run less of a risk of signal interception. When a signal gets intercepted or signals cross paths, the messages can get mixed up. You might end up seeing or hearing someone else’s baby monitor or vice versa.

Signal Interference

The number of other household devices that use a 2.4GHz frequency – the same frequency that digital baby monitors use – will also determine which type of monitor will be best for you. Many other wireless devices, such as routers or cordless phones, use this same frequency.

Even microwaves use this frequency. If you have many other devices in your home that transmit along the same frequency, you are likely get more interference from these devices if you have a digital baby monitor. The good thing about baby monitors is that they usually have different radio frequencies that you can switch between in case you catch some interference on one frequency.

Quality

As far as sound and video quality are concerned, digital monitors will give you better quality than analog monitors. There isn’t a huge difference, and this is more important to some than to others. If quality of sound and video are important to you, you would be better off purchasing a digital baby monitor.

Cost

If you’re shopping on a budget, you will probably want to look for an analog baby monitor since they have been around longer. Newer technology is generally more expensive. If you have a little more money to spend and sound/video quality are important to you, you would probably be more interested in a digital baby monitor.
