How to Apply Make-up on Oily Complexions

When you’ve got greasy complexion, your main issue is combating excess oil with your makeup throughout the day. Proper application can make the whole process easier.

Prepare First

Before you cleanse your face, pre-cleanse! I know, it sounds a little redundant, but before using a cleanser, rinse with warm water to get rid of excess dirt and oils. Then you can use your gentle cleaner before a toner like witch hazel or rosewater.

It seems odd to throw in moisturizer too, but keeping the complexion hydrated will decrease oil production. Just be sure to go for oil-free products, and to not wash excessively. Finally, use a matte primer to keep makeup intact throughout the day.

Applying Your Makeup

Ok, now that you’ve got the basic steps down, you can put your makeup on. Knowing exactly how to do it makes a huge difference.

Conceal Blemishes

Make use of light layers of liquid matte concealer to help cover up acne or other blemishes that greasy complexion is prone to. Something thin will prevent even more problems, but you can put on a powder foundation too for extra coverage. Too many layers mean you’ll probably need to retouch it more.

Greasy Complexion Foundation

Long lasting powders give you an even complexion and combat excess oil. Read the label carefully to be sure it’s oil-free, mattifying, and won’t clog your pores. A thin, even layer will work fine, although you can get more coverage with another layer applied by using a damp sponge.

Loose Finishing Powder

The best translucent powder for oily skin is a great extra layer for your face. Just use a thin layer on your brush and move the brush in big circles from the inside to the outside of your face.

Flush to the Cheeks

A mattifying brush produces a radiant glow and fights off excess oil. Apply the matte blush with a regular blush. Be sure to avoid shimmery blushes though.

Waterproof Eye Makeup

Natural oils can cause your makeup to kind of melt away. Waterproof and long lasting makeup can help you avoid that smudging, like if you were using waterproof eyeliner.

Later in the Day

You’ll want to be rid of excess oil throughout the day too, so start with simple blotting. This can remove oil without getting rid of your makeup. You can then mask the oily spots with powder here and there, or even apply oil fighting face masks.

What Causes Oily Complexions?

Those of us with greasy complexions know how annoying it can be, but most of us probably don’t know why exactly we have it in the first place. There are a few causes though.

Your Menstrual Cycle

Every month you’ve got to deal with this cycle of hormone production that go up and down. All these hormones may stimulate oil production, which is usually why you get acne around that same time.

Stress

Stress, whether it’s emotional or physical, starts up that adrenaline response. This surge in hormones can lead to an increase in oil production as your body responds.

The Weather

Yes, the actual weather makes a difference. The season doesn’t matter, but warmer and more humid weather will usually worsen the oil situation.

Cosmetics

Not all makeup will make your complexion oily, but really heavy makeup can trap oil and cause breakouts. That’s why lighter makeup is preferred, and why you shouldn’t touch your face a lot either!

Daily Routine for Oily Complexions

Start with a daily routine to improve the appearance and behavior of your complexion. Oily complexions can benefit a lot from some simple care with these steps:

  • Use a mask 2-3 times a week to reduce the oily appearance for days at a time and make pores smaller
  • Exfoliate 2-3 times a week to leave your complexion smooth and clean, but don’t do it too much- you don’t want to damage your complexion or encourage more oil!
  • Change your diet from foods high in fats, sugars, and oils to healthy fruits and vegetables to prevent breakouts
  • Witch hazel before applying makeup works as a natural toner to soak up excess oil without harmin
  • Oil free cosmetics should be your go-to, since they don’t clog pores
  • Don’t use excess amounts thinking it’ll soak up oil. The cakey feeling can actually encourage your complexion to create even more oil
  • Sun protection is important, so always protect your complexion

Conclusion

It took me a while to realize that I didn’t need to just settle for my greasy skin. I could do something about it with the right powder and makeup routine. If you’re dealing with oily skin like me then, pick up the right powder to handle the oil so you can go out feeling your greatest!
