What Causes Hard Skin on Feet?

Well… it depends on your foot. I know, that’s not a great answer, but your skin type and the amount of hard skin matter. In general however, there are a few usual causes. Detergents or chemicals in clothing or shoes can cause dead skin on weight bearing areas, but if  looks red too, you may have fungus to blame. Certain diseases like psoriasis, atopic eczema, and scleroderma may thicken the surface on your feet as well, along with common conditions like athlete’s foot. It all depends on what your foot actually looks like.

Some Easy Ways to Remove

Cracked, hard skin isn’t just annoying, but may be painful too. There are easy ways to remove it yourself without medication if it’s not too bad.

Scrubbing

Soak your feet in warm, soapy water for around 20 minutes. Then just use a pumice stone to gently scrub off the loosened skin cells and apply some moisturizer overnight. Throw some socks on and repeat every night until you notice the healing!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil moisturizes and heals the feet while fighting fungal and bacterial infections. Soak your feet in warm water before bed before drying and applying the oil. With a clean pair of socks for the night and a wash in the morning, you’ll be good to go.

Mentholated Rub

Apply some of the mentholated rub before bed and throw on those socks again. All you have to do is rinse in the morning and repeat. Even toenail fungus can be healed.

Paraffin Wax

Remove dry skin while softening it with just a little wax. Heat the paraffin wax in the microwave and combine it with an equal amount of mustard or coconut oil. Rub it onto your feet and put on some socks before washing it off in the morning.

Glycerin

Glycerin has both moisturizing and humectants properties that make it perfect for cracked feet. Mix a little with lemon juice, apply it, and 20 minutes later, wash it off.

Epsom Salt

By promoting circulation, Epsom salt helps with dead skin. Add a half cup into a foot tub and soak your feet, rub with a pumice stone, and soak one more time. With some petroleum jelly, there should be a difference in only a few days.

Vinegar

Vinegar has many uses, including the treatment of your cracked feet! The acetic acid will soften them up for easy exfoliation. Mix up half a cup in two cups of water, soak, and use your pumice stone. With some socks overnight, you’re good to go.

Lemon

Pick up a couple lemons at your supermarket to help with your feet! Lemon juice in warm water just before a soak and scrub will do wonders for the skin. You can also make a mixture if you’d like too, using sea salt, olive oil, and lemon juice.

Banana

Don’t throw away those overripe bananas! Blend them into a paste instead for 20 minutes before doing a quick wash. Doing this daily is a great way to treat those dry heels.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal works great for lots of things, including your feet. Mix together one tablespoon of the powder with some jojoba oil for a paste. Apply it to the feet and leave it on for half hour before rinsing it off. You can even mix it with honey and flour for a long soak.
