Remote work is now common with the pandemic raging on, which has closed down almost all of the offices. Establishing a routine to follow while working at home may not be an easy task in the new normal. The home environment may not offer the discipline and focus of an office because of all the comfy it provides. It is important to be organized like in your 9 to 5 as you work from home to be productive. Here are some tips to get you going.

  1. Set up a home office

Your workstation has a great impact on your productivity as you work at home. It may not be an ideal office setting but you can find ways to create a good working environment. Ensure you have a good internet setup and the best Wi-Fi extender to conduct your virtual meetings without any technical glitch. If you have video and phone calls regularly, you will need to have a quiet space with a closed door. 

  1. Maintain your morning & evening routine

Working from home is not a holiday, although the environment may invite a holiday mood. To ensure you are productive, your alarm should ring at the same time. Imagine you are supposed to be in the office at 8 and ready to kick-start your 9 to 5 job. 

In the evening, make sure to log out of the work system and leave prepared for tomorrow. Depending on the nature of your job, extend the work hours only if your work demands so while you plan to sleep on time.

  1. Show up to your workday

Working from home may be so relaxing to be in your official outfit. Most people like to dress in pajamas or casually. Although it is not a big deal to dress up officially, it is good to get ready with your work outfit. 

Get your office outfit on point and get into your office to get the work started. Your dress code affects the seriousness you dedicate to your work. If you are an attorney, for example, and you have a court session at 9 a.m., you will have to dress officially to address the jury.

Setting goals is not just about deadlines to be met at the end of the week. It includes setting up a plan and objective to be achieved. Because you are not commuting to work in the morning, find some time to set your weekly objectives that contribute to your overall progress and productivity on your work and assignments.

Although social distancing is a lockdown restriction, communicating with your coworkers virtually does not break any rules. Be in constant communication with your employer or fellow employees. 

Set up a virtual meeting and strategize on how to keep your work going. If your organization has professional development courses virtually, make sure you attend them from time to time because it keeps you in touch with your colleagues. You will also learn about your colleagues’ welfare as they work remotely.

  1. Have healthy meals

Maintaining a healthy diet may be easy and difficult at the same time while working from home. You have plenty of time to go to the grocery store and stuff your kitchen with organic fruits and vegetables. 

On the other hand, you are in constant proximity to the kitchen, which will tempt you to get snacks from the shelves more than necessary. You have to double-check the food you eat and the time you eat so the breakfast and lunch schedules are important. Eat meals that boost your energy and keep you working without bothering to constantly walk to the kitchen and remember to drink plenty of water.

  1. All work and no play?

You need your body to have the energy for productivity. Physical exercise is important for your health and job productivity which translates to the wealth you are working for. You have extra time to go to the gym for a morning workout session, take the evenings to stroll around or opt for yoga to connect with your inner self. 

Play that Call of duty mission, Fortnite, or FIFA in the evening with your kids, read that book, or listen to an album you haven’t kept up with in a long time. Your mental health is also an integral part of your well-being as a human being. 


The global pandemic has forced most workers to shift from their normal places of work to remotely work at home. It is not easy to change from a routine you are accustomed to and create a new way of working. It is important to establish a work routine at home that ensures you are healthy and productive.
